There is no denying the force that is the munchies. But have you got any idea why the hunger hits as soon as joint is out? It doesn’t matter how you choose to get high- cannabis will leave you feeling incredibly hungry. It’s exactly for this reason that cannabis is so effective in helping people with nausea and appetite loss. There are a few theories and studies that have taken a closer look at the munchies, read on to find out more.
How the brain determines hunger
A study conducted by the Yale School of Medicine in 2015 seems to have a pretty good idea. Neuroscientists examined how the brain of a mouse responds to cannabis. What they found was that the pot tricked a specific neuron called POMC into thinking the body was starving. What makes this particularly strange though, is that one of the main jobs of the POMC is reduce eating when the body is full. “We were surprised to find that the neurons we thought were responsible for shutting down eating, were suddenly being activated and promoting hunger, even when you are full. It fools the brain’s central feeding system,” said the lead author.
THC and CBD for appetite
Both of the main cannabiniods in cannabis have the potential to leave you counting down the minutes to dinner. This leaves you with a vast array of options and methods for increasing your appetite, without necessarily getting high. THC has psychoactive properties while CBD does not. IF you want to skip the head high, opt for a CBD oil or capsule instead.
How to avoid the munchies
Perhaps you’re not a fan of how hungry getting high leaves you. If want to keep enjoying marijuana though, you’ll need to choose a very specific strain. Look for weed that is high in THCV, also known as “skinny weed”. Strains with this compound are more energizing and is often reported as decreasing appetite instead of increasing it. If you suffer from anxiety, you may want to be careful opting for these strains.
