What is Shatter?
Shatter is one of the fastest growing trends in cannabis culture today. In a nut shell, shatter is weed in it’s concentrated form. Using butane (a liquified gas) as a solvent to extract cannabinoids and terpenes, a sappy, golden substance is produced. Also known as Honey Oil, Wax, Dabs or Butane Hash Oil, shatter is quickly becoming a mainstream method for getting stoned. It’s unassuming appearance of a yellow/golden taffy texture gives it’s user a stronger and faster high than the traditional flower.
How Do You Use Shatter?
The most common way to consume shatter is by using a ‘rig’ (basically a pipe) and smoking it as a ‘dab’. First heat a surface (commonly known as a ‘nail’) with a blowtorch until it reaches approximately 400 degrees Celsius. The shatter is then placed on the nail, vaporized and inhaled. Other, less traditional methods of smoking shatter are with a hash pipe or a vaporizer. Although both of these options are cheaper than purchasing a shatter rig, they aren’t nearly as effective as they lack the sufficient heat to properly vaporize the product.
Is Shatter Dangerous?
Although shatter has its skeptics, most cannabis users are thrilled about this new method to experience marijuana. There are concerns regarding potency of shatter as a first time user can be caught off guard at the strength of the effects they experience. It’s important to use caution with dosages and ease into shatter with small amounts at first. The most common area of concern is with the manufacturing of the product as butane is highly explosive. Many amateur producers have experienced explosions that have lead to fires and people getting injured. From the users perspective, shatter is a safe and fun way to get stoned as long as you ease into it.
